So Duncan came home yesterday with a collection box for Pennies for Patients (picture the old Unicef trick-or-treat boxes). He had it in his hand as he got off the bus yesterday afternoon and the first thing he said to me when he saw me eyeball it was that it was to collect money for sick kids. He went on to describe how the whole thing worked and that they had a few days to collect money and get it the box back to school. When I was putting away laundry today, I noticed the box on his bedroom floor sitting right next to his piggy bank. When I went to pick it up, I realized he'd put some money in it. When I went to check how much, I counted over $40 in the box, which left barely $10 in his piggy bank.
Needless to say, I was a bit floored - proud, but floored. He hadn't come to ask Jeffrey or I for any money, he'd just decided to donate some of his own. And mind you, this is the kid that lobbies to buy new toys and games 24/7 (and is required to do it with his own money). Donating as much as he had wouldn't allow him to do much shopping of his own for quite some time.
And he didn't tell Jeffrey or I what he'd done, so he wasn't looking to brag, be recognized for it, or be reimbursed for what he was donating. He just wanted to give them some money, because he understood that they needed it. Man, what a sweet kid...
