Cooking Class

One of the nice perks we've found with Leander ISD, is that they offer after-school classes. After hearing about the current list of classes offered, Ella Peyton asked to take the cooking class led by Lori Hinze, of Lori's Culinary Company. What I like about these folks is that they specialize in teaching about healthy food and making good, nutritious choices - most often with non-processed foods.

So far, they kids have learned how to "eat the rainbow" by cooking with different colored foods. An example of that from their first class was the rainbow fritatta, using red cherry tomatoes, orange sweet potatoes, green asparagus, and purple cabbage. They also had fruit smoothies with vanilla yogurt, honey, strawberries, bananas and blueberries.

In the last class, Lori had them try a variety of apples - fuji, pink ladies, red delicious, golden delicious, granny smiths, honey crisp and even crab apples. The kids also enjoyed peeling the apples and making applesauce out of them.

Ella has really enjoyed the classes so far. I'm curious to see if she wants to do more of this with the next round they offer. I suspect she will. It would be fun to find out if they do parent classes too. I'm curious about getting new ideas/recipes with healthier ingredients. While I love my Paula Deen, it wouldn't hurt to give the old girl a break!
