Our Dell team had its quarterly all-hands meeting yesterday, this time to the Capital Area Food Bank. With about 30 of us in a 3 hour shift, we were able to process around 14,500 pounds of food, which translates into about 11,000 meals. While those numbers sound huge, it blew me away that they told us that that amount of food would only get folks in the central Texas area through about next Tuesday. After seeing the extreme variety of food that went through (and mind you we only processed the frozen stuff yesterday), I was impressed to see the amount of viable food that came in from both HEB and Sam's. They were consistently able to freeze food on or before its packaged expiration date in such a way that little to no food from their stores went to waste. Not that I needed an extra reason to shop at either of those places since we frequent both of them, but it really did add some interesting perspective on how those folks run their companies and contribute to the community.
If you ever get the chance to go volunteer at the Food Bank or a facility like it, I'd highly recommend it. From what they told us, a good bulk of what they're able to accomplish is done by volunteers. They could definitely use the help.
