We took the kids to Galeveston yesterday to check out Moody Gardens and tour the island for the first time since Hurricane Ike. Moody Gardens seemed pretty much the same, for the most part. The kids definitely enjoyed The Aquarium and a trip to The Rainforest Cafe.
It was also interesting to see the island and how much progress had been made/not made at this point. There were several attractions, stores and structures that appeared to be completely back to normal which was really nice to see. There were also many signs, though, that the island is still struggling. The vegetatation seemed virtually destroyed - unless it was a palm tree or some kind of odd pine, no trees had any green leaves on them and appeared to be mostly dead. There were also several stores and structures that were clearly completely wiped away - many with only stilts left.
It's clear that they're working hard to get the island as close to pre-hurricane status as they can. It will undoubtedly take quite a bit more time, but the signs only a few months out are definitely encouraging. In the meantime, we'll do what we can to support the local economy. :)
