Jeffrey and I just got back from a lovely long weekend in New Orleans. It was the first vacation he and I have taken together, just the two of us, in God only knows how long. While we definitely missed the kids, it was so nice to get aired out and go run around for a while! We saw a slew of different places while we were there.
The highlights include a couple of lengthy walks in the Garden District where we saw houses that belonged to folks like Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Anne Rice and Nicholas Cage. We also took a look around the Lafayette Cemetery, which was phenominally creepy, but beautiful at the same time if that's possible. We went to the lower 9th ward as well to check out the new houses being built by the Make it Right organization (see below). And a trip to New Orleans wouldn't be complete without multiple strolls through the French Quarter.
We also ate our weight in food at restaurants such as the Acme Oyster Bar, Emeril's NOLA, Cafe du Monde, and the Louisiana Pizza Kitchen. Yum. We will both be starting food detox tomorrow.
We'd like to thank Anne and Joanna for staying with the kids the last few days. They had a great time and miss you guys already. Thanks so much!!!
The Lafayette Cemetery
After becoming aware of this project after seeing Brad Pitt interviewed about it during the Today Show, we were really interested in seeing it in person. The Make it Right organization is rebuilding the lower 9th ward after it was completely destroyed after Katrina. All of the houses are extremely energy efficient, in fact, many of them are actually putting energy back into the system.
There are over 50 homes completed and from the looks of it, several more are on the way.
