While Ella Peyton's brownie troop has one official leader, each mom takes a month and leads the girls as they earn the badge of their daughter's choice. This month was our month and Ella Peyton had chosen to do the hiking badge.
So, to get the badge earned, we had the girls come over to the house and talk through things like what to bring on a hike, how to navigate, things to look for while you're out, etc. They also got to make their own trail mix, which they would then take with them on their hike. And fortunately we went last Sunday, so we were in between visits from the polar vortex (it got up to almost 80 degrees on Sunday if you can believe it).
We took the girls to hike up Mount Bonnell. It's not a very long hike, but it is a gorgeous one. For those that have never been, on one side of the hill is the Colorado River (pictured above) and on the other side is a view of the Austin skyline (pictured below).
The girls seemed to really enjoy it. One girl had packed her binoculars, so they all got turns checking out the view and seeing what they could see. Another brought her first aid kit, so of course they took any opportunity they could to help mend a fellow troop member. Between those things and their own "homemade" snack, it was a pretty good afternoon. Hiking badge officially earned!
