Osgood Schlatter

Young Master Duncan had been complaining of leg pain off and on lately, which Jeffrey and I had both chalked up to growing pains, until he essentially came to a dead halt during a soccer game a couple of weeks ago. After the game, Jeffrey took our limping young man to an urgent care facility for some Xrays. The physician there pointed to a small handful of things it may be, with the majority of them being resolved by rest.

After both a follow up visit to the pediatrician last week and a subsequent visit with an orthopedist this morning, the verdict is that Duncan has Osgood Schlatter disease. Fortunately, if you're going to have an issue with your knee, it's a good one to have. He's got little to no pain with it now (as he hasn't run on it in almost 2 weeks) and will have a couple of physical therapy appointments over the next couple of weeks to learn some stretches and exercises that can help deter some of the extra bone growth and pain. It sounds like this will be something he may have to manage a little bit as he goes through periods of growth spurts and/or significant amounts of exercise, but eventually he'll grow out of it.
